Aptera — Old and New
In a time before time, ancient battles were fought by beings of immense power and influence. One such battle was fought on the island of Crete in an ancient city now called Aptera. The Muses were one such powerful race that had created music, drama, and all of the creative arts. Another winged race of similar power had created singing and considered themselves the best at their craft.
It was to be that these two headstrong races would meet for a final contest to prove the best. Their meeting places would come be called the city of Aptera, meaning “wingless bird” in the ancient Greek.
The Muses and the Sirens met at the appointed hour at the appointed location and began their contest of singing to the sons of men, who would be their judge. Even today you can see the exact circle where the singer stood in the theater. The contest went on through the heat of the day, and finally at the point of exhaustion, the Sirens gave up in defeat.
So distraught at their loss, the Sirens tore out their feathers and wings, turned as white as sea-foam, and threw themselves into the sea. The city of the defeated to forever be called “wingless bird” or Aptera to mark the location which you can visit today on the island of Crete.
A sad story, “Yes,” but not the end of our story. The name, Aptera, has again been taken up, and lives again as the solution to our transportation needs… no need for gasoline, giant batteries, or solar arrays that are as big as a house. A vehicle that you can plug in like a toaster, or just leave it in the sun to recharge. Safe, fast, comfortable, and most of all a fraction of the price other electric vehicles.
But why the name, Aptera? which has come to mean “wingless bird.” Simple, the Aptera has the efficiency of a wingless bird on the ground. There is no more efficient shape for a ground vehicle according to NASA and several universities.
