Through the Aegean Sea
Our voyage (20 August 2021) was one of the early re-starts of the Viking Ocean Cruising Line, and ALL of the safety protocols were in place, from testing prior to boarding the aircraft to daily testing aboard ship. Masks were worn in public places and social distancing was also observed. In other words, we were as safe as anyone, anywhere could be.
We started from the beautiful island of Malta, an island that has always welcomed visitor and knows over 25 beaches, good food, and plenty of sights to see, but don’t my word for it… see for yourselves.
On to a day at sea and then the port of Kalamata, with a nice seaside harbor, good food, museums, and plenty to see and buy. We went on to the ancient city of Messene that once held and important position in the Greek hierarchy with a wall around the city over 10 km in length. We did take to few photos… so enjoy.
The city of Athens was the next stop for two days of touring. It was not nearly enough time to see all the sights, but we will be back many more times to fill in the details, to enjoy ancient and new. Visiting both the new and old Archaeological were a start to our exploration.
The next port of call was Santorini, yet another possible location of the ancient city of Atlantis. Most of the island offers amazing views from sheer cliffs and winding roads, but see for yourself, and the amazing cruise out of the harbor.
Rhodes was amazing in beauty and just plain impressive fortresses perched on unreachable mountain-tops. We did climb to the top of one, and I have the proof (Temple of Athena Lindia).
Our final visit was to the island of Crete, and many of our friends headed to the traditional sites, but I visited the ancient city of Aptera… Why? That is a whole other web page.
